Flatbed Truckers 

As a flatbed driver, you’ll haul various freight, from cars to machinery and construction equipment. Your route may include local deliveries or cross-country hauls. Flatbed drivers are typically paid by the mile, so it’s important to know how much your trucking company calculates its mileage rate each month. It can vary widely based on factors including fuel costs, truck maintenance, and tolls (plus other surcharges). 

Freight Haulers 

Freight Haulers may be responsible for loading and unloading their freight, or they may have this done by a separate company that contracts with the freight hauler’s company. The freight hauler will usually get paid per mile driven and will sometimes be paid by the number of deliveries made in a day or week, depending on how much they are contracted to do.

Regional drivers typically live in one area but work in multiple states, often as far as 200 miles from their homes. They mostly use bigger trailers (10,000 pounds or more) and may stay on the road for longer periods.  

OTR drivers spend most of their time traveling throughout the country on long hauls between destinations where they deliver freight before returning home again.
